Our Story
Hi! ’m Johanka, and this is my dad, Tomáš. We play castanets, that instrument originally from Spain. But we play them completely differently than flamenco dancers.
The technique we use? My dad actually invented it. He was 12 when he found a single castanet in a drawer. He had no idea how to play it and YouTube and Insta tutorials weren’t really a thing back then 😁 So… he just made up his own technique.
Years later, he taught it to me. It was during lockdown... yep, Covid. School was closed, I couldn’t see my friends, and I had no idea what to do. And this technique gave me something. Actually… not just the technique. Music.
Even though I’m a musician’s daughter, I never really managed to learn any instrument properly. I tried! Violin, for example… ouch. But I always gave up. I didn’t like practicing for hours, I wanted results now. 😁
But with castanets… somehow, it just clicked. 💙
This wasn’t practice – it was play!

About our castanets
Our castanets are not your typical product. And no. we don’t mean that as a sales line.
These castanets were designed specifically for the NewCastanets technique. They’re made based on the original model my dad hand-carved himself. There’s a little piece of us in every pair.
Each one is hand-cast in collaboration with a small Czech workshop. We personally oversee and fine-tune every detail. My dad doesn’t let a single pair leave the workshop unless it’s perfect.
Once they’re ready, we tie them up and write a personal note just for you. Because for us, this is personal. Then we pack them in our signature box.
No, these castanets aren’t universal. They’re not suited for other techniques. They were made for you and your own musical journey.
Of course, you can start out with regular castanets from a music store. That’s totally fine. But ours are here for the moment you decide to go all in. 💙

But...
I've never played anything, I don't know music theory and I probably don't have any talent...
So there are two of us! I'll probably never learn the sheet music either. It's lucky that no one wrote them for castanets. I understand that it's a step into the unknown, but in life we usually regret what we never tried. 💙
